The area covered by the Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Diabetes Team stretches from Staithes in the north to Reighton in the south and out to Helmsley in the west, taking in the market towns of Malton and Pickering inland with Whitby, Scarborough and Filey along the coast.

Whilst Scarborough with its 12th Century castle was the first British resort, it is Goathland near Whitby which has achieved recent fame as 'Heartbeat Country'. This is part of Yorkshire, where the moors meets the sea, has a diverse population from the rural farming communities, to large numbers of pensioners who came to the seaside towns to retire.

The team (Pictured Left) is based at Scarborough Hospital with satellite clinics at Malton, Pickering and Whitby. As well as providing a service for the adult population, specialist services include Paediatric, Antenatal and Foot Ulcer clinics throughout the area, with a Domicilliary Service for the housebound.

In-patient care is provided at Scarborough, Whitby and Malton Hospitals. As well as working with Secondary care, there are close links with Primary care, providing support to 29 surgeries. The area is served by one Primary Care Trust (Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale). The Diabetes Project Group has health professional members from Primary and Secondary care as well as patients. This body amalgamated with the existing Local Diabetes Service Advisory Group and is the major influence on the local diabetes services.
