Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust is situated along the banks of the river Tees and serves a population of 196,000 people linked to 30 GP. practices. Unfortunately the area experiences a high level of deprivation with levels of poor income, health, education, housing, child poverty and unemployment higher than the national average. Middlesbrough has 4 wards in the top 10 out of a national total of 1871.

What we’re famous for!
Our roots are in heavy engineering and chemicals and the area enjoys a worldwide reputation in engineering markets. The University of Teesside is fast gaining respect as an established first class educational institution, and also attracts students from all over the world. Captain Cook the 18th century explorer was born in Middlesbrough, as was Brian Clough, rock star Chris Rea, comedian Bob Mortimer and actress Thelma Barlow.

The ‘Boro’ (Middlesbrough football club) has a fanatical following in the town.

The Transporter bridge over the river Tees is a well-loved land mark, made famous by the recent edition of the TV series ‘Aufweidersein Pet’.

Another well-loved local land mark is the disused quarry Roseberry Topping, believed by many Teessiders to be our very own extinct volcano.

Diabetes services in Middlesbrough

3% of our patients have diabetes (nearly 5900). The PCT diabetes service is led by Julie Allison Diabetes Nurse Specialist (via 01642 352370.)

Most patients are managed by designated diabetes lead staff within their practice, and many surgeries now help patients to start insulin without being referred to the hospital.

Other services are provided by staff at the diabetes care centre at James Cook University Hospital (01642 854235).
