The Diabetes Clinic is held monthly on Tuesday afternoons in the Out Patients Department at the Alfred Bean Hospital, Bridlington Road, Driffield YO25 5JR.This is a small, modern community hospital with a 20 bedded GP ward, Day Hospital, Minor Injuries, Macmillan and Out Patients Units offering a wide range of services.

ACCESS TO SERVICES:

Dietitian:
• referral by GP or other health professional
• clinics are held weekly on Tuesdays in the Alfred Bean Hospital.
• home visits are undertaken where appropriate.

Diabetes nurse:
• there is open access to the diabetes nurse for anyone with diabetes, or who cares for someone with diabetes. A referral letter from a GP or consultant is not required. People are normally seen by appointment at the Alfred Bean Hospital.
• Home visits are made as required.

Podiatrist:
• application forms are available from clerk (tel. 01482 677418) for self referral or referral by a health professional
• clinics are held weekly on Tuesdays in the Alfred Bean Hospital

Diabetes Foot Clinic:
Urgent referrals can be made to the Bridlington diabetes foot clinic held on Thursday mornings, Bridlington Hospital, Tel. 01262 420321

Specialist Footwear:
can be provided as prescribed by the diabetologist or podiatrist. Shoe fitting sessions are held on Thursday mornings in the Alfred Bean Hospital

Retinal Screening:
annual screening organised through local surgeries. 

Educational courses provided by Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Dietitian:

X-Pert: designed for people with Type 2 diabetes. Two and a half hours a week for 6 weeks. Topics covered include: what is diabetes? diet, weight management, complications, physical activity, treatments and a supermarket tour. Ask your Practice Nurse or GP to refer you.

DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating): designed for people with Type 1 diabetes. One week course (5 days). Topics covered include: what is diabetes? carbohydrate counting and adjusting insulin doses for normal eating, activity, illness and managing hypos. Ask your Specialist Nurse, Dietitian, Practice Nurse or GP to refer you.
