The Diabetes Service
This is a community orientated service which covers the town of Bridlington and surrounding villages. The Diabetes Specialist Nurses are based at Bridlington and District Hospital, Bessingby Road, Bridlington, East Yorkshire, Y016 4QP

Access to the Diabetes Specialist Nurses’ service:

This is an open access service for anyone with, or who cares for, people with diabetes. A referral letter from your GP or Consultant is not required.

Diabetic Clinic: - held in Outpatients, Bridlington Hospital every Thursday pm

Foot Clinic: - held most Thursday mornings. This is for urgent diabetic foot problems only. Held in the Chiropody Department, Bridlington Hospital 01262 423021.

Retinal Screening: - yearly service provided at Bridlington Hospital. All people with diabetes who do not have mobility problems and do not see the eye specialist will be sent an appointment.

Children with diabetes: - The children’s clinic is held two monthly at Bridlington Hospital with Dr Venkatesh, Consultant Paediatrician, and Suzanne Lenton, Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse in attendance. Dr Venkatesh – Secretary – Tel 01723 342268.

Educational courses provided by the Diabetes Specialist Nurses and Dietitians:

X-Pert: designed for people with Type 2 diabetes. two and a half hours a week for 6 weeks. Topics covered: what is diabetes? diet, weight management, complications, physical activity, treatments and a supermarket tour. Ask your Practice Nurse or GP to refer you.

DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating): designed for people with Type 1 diabetes. A one week course (5 days). Topics covered include: what is diabetes? carbohydrate counting and adjusting insulin doses for normal eating, activity, illness and managing hypos. Ask your Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Specialist Dietitian, Practice Nurse or GP to refer you.
